"Embla Dancing". The base of this bowl is carved into tree roots. This bowl represents the spirit of Embla as she dances with the freedom of being released from the earth. Embla and Ask were two trees unleashed from the earth by the Norse god Oden. From them, the human race evolved.
This bowl was part of the juried exhibit "2006 Bluegrass Biennial". "Ode to Georgia", as you might guess, suggests a tulip in honor of Georgia O'Keeffe. It was juried into the 2006 exhibit "Southern Presence", open to all artists working in the south. As the Nevada collector says about her bowl "This reminds me of a Sedona sunset." The lip of this bowl is knife edge thin with some bark balancing the red spalting. The spalting extends dramatically across the bottom of the bowl.
This is an incredibly elegant piece. The spalting is dramatic and balances nicely with the form. Equally dramatic is the lightning bolt-like crack running cleanly down one side of the bowl. "Fertile Seed". A very organic shape with a thin, curved, undulating edge gives this vessel the appearance of a fertile seed or egg bursting with growth. Dramatic markings across the non-visible side are suggestive of an impregnated egg.
The walls of this bowl are very thin and so the bowl is very light. The simplicity of the form and the unique spalted quality of the wood, make this bowl comforting and very appealing. "Open" is a sensuous, feminine, open form vessel.
